Monsanto is seeking a highly motivated individual to join our Insect Resistance Management (IRM) team as a Mathematical Modeler.  This individual will collaborate with researchers within the IRM team and across our Regulatory organization to develop and identify appropriate modeling approaches and programming alternatives to support the design and implementation of IRM programs on a global basis.  Work on the application of mathematical modeling to other important environmental issues related to agriculture also will be encouraged.  This position offers the opportunity to work with state-of-the-art modeling approaches and programming platforms in the development of novel modeling methodologies and the creative application of existing methods for IRM-related problems.  Specific responsibilities will include:• Develop mathematical modeling solutions to support IRM programs and IRM-related decisions.

• Improve existing mathematical modeling approaches for insect resistance and related systems and develop new methods with respect to industry-wide standards which can impact freedom to operate.• Disseminate novel methods and results to the scientific community through peer-reviewed publications and presentations to scientific conferences.• Increase the level of mathematical modeling knowledge and appreciation throughout the company via training, computer applications, technical articles, and white papers.


PhD in Biomathematics, Mathematical Ecology or Entomology, or related field of study, or equivalent based on experience.

Training and/or experience in mathematical modeling or related methods applied to ecological and/or genetic systems.  Demonstrated programming skills using R, C, or related programming/statistical packages.

Experience working with multi-disciplinary workgroups or teams.

Knowledge of insect resistance, insect resistance management and related issues desirable

Other Desired skills:     Ability to communicate well and explain significance of research findings.

  1. You would use math to calculate how many insects are being resisted be each solution and therefore which one is more efficient. It is also used to improve the methods the solutions are being used. Math relates to agriculture because quantities are all a part of math, the amount of water per crop and pesticides all are based on math. The branch of mathematics probably used is statistics because it is predicting how effective a solution will be at resisting insects and percentages are used for that.

I would use math in this position to define how much solution of insect resistant should I use in a given amount of land; in this way I would know the how the insect resistant would affect my crops and products or how effective the solution would be. Math is use in agriculture to measure the land where the crops would be planted and the use of different insecticides and fertilizers. I believe that the math that had been used her is Algebra because you have a certain amount of something and you are solving for ‘X’ to figure out how much of something should you apply to make it even more effective and safe as well.

  3. The discipline of agricultural economics has played a pioneering role in the application of mathematical models in economics. Originally, farm management specialists developed enterprise budgets to help farmers identify their best farming activities.Linear programming is a powerful tool for maximizing profits or expected profits when a decision maker has a collection of potential production activities that each use a variety of production resources with fixed input-output coefficients and the production resources are either available in fixed supply or can be purchased at fixed prices.The standard linear programming problem is: max π=c1x1+c2x2+…cnxn..

  4. I would use math for this position by finding out how much insect resistance is needed in a specific area. I would also use math to find out how much resistance can be used without damaging any crops.

  5. I would use different math equations to fix the agricultural problems in the company. I would use equations like (A=RKLSCP) to see if I would need to improve the soil first. Then for the plowing, planting, and clearing I would use (Xtm+Xth), (X(Xtm+Xtm)+Y(Xom+Xoh)+Z(Xth+Xoh)), and[ ax bx (Xtm + Xth) + C(Xom + Xoh) + (Xth + Xoh)]. Math is very important to agriculture because certain math formulas are used to produce more crops and they are also used to manipulate certain genes to create better crops.

  6. In this position i would use math for modeling IRM, finding alternatives for IRM, and find how it affects the environment. I would also use math to find out how insect resistance harms and area. It relate to agriculture because the insect resistance is hurting the environment and math can be used to show how the insect resistance hurts an area. I believe the kind of math being used is statistics because they use statics to find out how much insect resistance is in one area and find out how to help it.

  7. I would use math to find how much insect resistance should be put on the fields. Also this would help my understanding of finding how many insects there are and how much solution should be added in order to kill the insects but not the crops. Math relates to agriculture because you will need to find the area and length of the fields, in order to put the resistance as well as seeds. It would also be useful when determining how far apart you should put one crop from the other in a long row. I believe this branch of mathematics is Algebra, because you are trying to find the distance and area of the land.

  8. I would use math to find how many joules(energy) from the anti-insect solutions are required to fend off the insects, finding the right solution to be appropriate to use on the plants. The use of this math would need relate to agriculture because the number of insects, needed to get the solutions, affecting the area would help find the area of the field and the number of resistance solutions needed to protect that area. This part of math is partly geometry and algebra, having to find the area of the field and the numbers/equations involved with finding the right amount of joules fixed in this problem.

  9. I would use math in this position to find out how much insect resistance is needed. The insect resistance would be measured by mathmatic functions. Math would also be used to improve existing insect resistance methods to make them more efficient.

I would use math for this position because as a Mathematical Modeler you will be working with many models and many trials, which may vary and certain calculations would be needed to find the exact or nearly exact amount. In this position you would be experimenting on finding insect repellent, so exact measurements and calculations to complex formulas will be needed so that the repellent will not damage wherever it is applied. Math relates to agriculture in a way that once again calculations will be needed in applying anything to it, such as the amount of water required for irrigation based on a crops water requirement and weather and soil conditions. Not only Statistics is used for this job but also Arithmetic, Geometry, and Algebra.

I would use algebra to create an accurate mathematical proportion between how much water is used, along with pesticide per a specific area in order to ensure that the insect resistant works efficiently. For instance, if the ratio between water and pesticide is incorrect then the repellent could be ineffective since it is diluted or harmful since it is saturated with pesticide. Ratios are also necessary to calculate the amount of pesticide solution should be used for specific amount of land to prevent environmental damage. To find the area of the land basic geometry would be vital by first measuring the length and width of land, then applying the area formula. In addition, statistics could be applied to predict how much more insect repellent would be needed as the farm expands or as more bugs come with season changes.

  12. Calculations would need to include:
    -the total and local area of the various places that need to be covered
    -gross and local quantity and concentration of pests per species during time lapse cycle
    -% of effectiveness of each possible pesticide per species of pest per unit quantity of pesticide
    -effect on yield, growth rate, health, etc., of each species of product being protected per unit quantity of pesticide
    -effect on yield, growth rate, health, etc. of each species of product per concentration of each species of pest
    -gross effect on yield, growth rate, health, etc., of each species of product per pesticide per unit quantity of pesticide
    -concentration of product within population centers
    -average quantity of product consumed per person per population center
    -% chance of negative health effect occurring per unit quantity of pesticide
    -average quantity of pesticide consumed with product per person
    -% of population likely to be negatively affected in each population center per product per product quantity per pesticide quantity (taking into account all of the above)
    -cost per unit quantity of pesticide

    There is more that i could list but i have lost track and there is no way I can possibly provide a comprehensive list of everything that needs to be calculated and taken into account. The fields that would be required (based on everything so far listed) are :
    statistics (effectiveness, concentration, distribution, etc), probability (effect chance), algebra(most of the calculations), geometry and trigonometry(area, required quantity per area, etc), set theory (categories and groups of similar pesticides based on various attributes)

    • Using all of this data (plus whatever is not listed) you can determine the optimal quantity of and optimal concentrations of the optimal pesticides for each solution to be used at each area for each product.

  13. Insect Management requires a great understanding of not only ecology and chemistry, but also math. For example temperature is the main factor to determine at what rate the insects develop. A math modeler’s job could possibly be determining the frequency, timing and the intervals of the “insecticide application”.

  14. The insect management team would need to use math to figure out how much insect resistance is needed. The I.M would also need to calculate the formulas which are needed to determine how the repellant affects the objects surrounding the insects. In addition, the I.M also needs to calculate which repellants are most effective on certain insects. Statistics would be the primary type of math because the I.M needs to find out the specific results of the repellant and how it is most effective.
